proposal is the garden layout, which will be defined by three elements. Firstly, the Fritz Koenig Spherical bronze statue from the original World Trade Center Plaza would be placed in the very center of the circular garden. Secondly, where the footprint of the garden overlaps the footprints of the former twin towers, there will be two large open grassy lawns. These lawns will be representative of the United States citizens who lost their lives in the tragedy. Thirdly, the rest of the garden will be divided based proportionally on the loss of life of the citizens of other nations on September 11th. The loss of life among non-American citizens was quite high, particularly among the British and the Chinese. Based on these figures, the garden would be divided up in to lots. Then, working through the channels of diplomacy, each nation would send their own horticulturists to design their plot in the garden. For instance, the British plot might have a symmetrical formal garden with a maze of groomed bushes in the traditional British style. The Chinese may have rockeries and bamboo, a small fish pond and a ting. Other nations who may have lost only a single citizen may be granted enough space to plant a single tree and maybe a small piece of statuary. This was the World Trade Center, after all. I've worked to create a memorial plan that will be sensitive to this reality.
